PAST PRESIDENT (2024-2025)
Mr. Ajay Sehgal is the Past President of ASCE Golden Gate Branch and a retired Branch Chief from the Office of Encroachment Permits at the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). Over the course of his distinguished career, Mr. Sehgal served as a Senior Bridge Engineer and Subject Matter Expert in Temporary Structures, providing statewide guidance on the design and construction of falsework, scaffolding, bridge trestles, shoring, trenching, and bridge demolition. He played a leading role in updating the Caltrans Falsework and Trenching & Shoring Manuals and was the key liaison with railroad companies to secure approval of temporary structures for projects adjacent to rail corridors.
Mr. Sehgal began his Caltrans career in 1988, contributing to the rehabilitation of the Schuyler Heim Bridge in Los Angeles. His project portfolio spans many landmark structures in California, including the seismic retrofit of the Presidio Viaduct, the Eastern Approach to the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, and the new Self-Anchored Suspension Bay Bridge, where he undertook international assignments in China and South Korea to inspect custom-fabricated shear keys and bearings. As a Design Engineer in the Toll Program Bridge Maintenance & Investigations unit, he also prepared rehabilitation and emergency bid documents for long-span toll bridges across California.
In addition to his professional contributions, Mr. Sehgal has been deeply involved in advancing technical knowledge within the engineering community. He served as Chairman of the Caltrans Temporary Structures Committee, co-chaired the 2013 and 2019 International Orthotropic Box Girder (OBG) Conferences in Sacramento, and was a keynote speaker at the 2015 OBG Conference in Tianjin, China. His leadership earned recognition with the Thomas E. Stanton Award for the 2013 OBG Conference.
Mr. Sehgal’s ASCE service is equally notable. He previously served as Vice President (Education) of the ASCE Capitol Branch (2011–2014), Vice President of the Golden Gate Branch (2018–2021), and President of the Golden Gate Branch (2024–2025).
Beyond his engineering and leadership roles, Mr. Sehgal enjoys reading, traveling, dancing, and promoting unity in diversity.

PAST PRESIDENT (2023-2024)
My ASCE Journey all began as a freshman in college thanks to a sign that said “free pizza for engineers”. Now 20+ years later I’ve been fortunate to be involved in volunteer leadership roles with ASCE across the state, most recently serving as the Golden Gate Branch President. My career has taken me from my start in Long Beach, through Sacramento, and recently over to the Bay Area where my practice focuses on a wide variety of project types and technical challenges.
